Journeymen: Courage

Description

Brain: Punch Out characters with halos? Seriously?
Heart: Shut up. It'll be awesome.

Journeymen:

The Journeymen universe is my interpretation of the Punch Out series. It began after I discovered Glass Joe and wondered, “Why in the world does this guy keep fighting?” I did some research on boxing, and I was surprised at what I found. I won’t get into that too much, but it made me wonder - what would Punch Out be like if it was realistic?

What if the boxers sweated, bruised, and bled? How would Little Mac really feel the first time he knocked out another human being? How would foreign characters overcome language barriers and discrimination? When would Glass Joe stop being quiet and polite and really start opening up to the other boxers? Might Von Kaiser have a wife and children, even though he doesn’t seem to like kids in general? How well does Don Flamenco really know Carmen? And what’s with Aran Ryan’s sister?

Yes, I realize I put way too much thought into this. But I enjoy exploring Punch Out’s story, character, and relationship possibilities in the Journeymen universe.

Portrait Series:

I’m drawing seven Journeymen characters who represent the Seven Virtues (faith, hope, love, prudence, justice, restraint, and courage) in order to highlight their inner saintliness. (Yes, that includes Aran Ryan. Don’t ask me how I’ll manage that.) Because saints are never the ones you expect.

Joseph “Glass Joe” Glace represents courage. Because being brave doesn’t mean you never feel fear. It means you don’t let it control you.

Oh, and see that necklace? That's a Saint Jude medal. Anyone who figures out the relevance of that gets a free internet. :)

Who do you think I should draw next? And what virtues should go with which boxers?

He's often being portrayed as a whimp but he actually is anything but. He keeps trying and never backs down, no matter the consequences.
